Dr. Christy Walker
Author, The HBCU Band Experience
Christy, a native of Hampton, Virginia, earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NC A&T). While she was a student at A&T, she played clarinet in the Blue and Gold Marching Machine and played in the symphonic band for 4 years. In 1999, Christy, along with Michael Lee, created The 5th Quarter, a website dedicated to showcasing HBCU marching bands. Christy is the Lead Author of The HBCU Experience: HBCU Band Alumni Edition, the first of its kind book accounting experiences of HBCU band alumni. She is also the creator of the podcast "The HBCU Band Experience with Christy Walker". Christy received a master’s degree and doctorate in Higher Ed Administration and serves as Director of Career Services at Durham Technical Community College in Durham, NC.
Taylor Whitehead
Assistant Director @Virginia State University Trojan Explosion Marching Band
Taylor Leonard Whitehead was born in Farmville, VA. He attended Virginia State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education in 1996 and in 2008 received his Master of Music Education from Norfolk State University. He served as Band Director at Warren County HS in NC where he lead the "Dynamic Marching Machine" to become one of the most successful show-style bands in NC and throughout the nation. In January 2018, Mr. Whitehead became full-time Assistant Band Director at Virginia State University after first joining part-time in 2013. He is very active in several collegiate organizations and is also best selling author as co-writer of The HBCU Experience: The HBCU Band Alumni Edition.
